Spring Hair at Its Best

Spring has always been a time for change. From changes in weather, to changes in fashion trends, now is the time to embrace a change and welcome what's new. And beyond buying brightly hued duds and switching from boot to open-toed, now's the time to adopt a fresh new headstrong look. Let your hair do the talking!

We got a clue on what's hot in hair for spring by warming up with the experts from Vidal Sassoon Salon. We were presented with Sassoon's new looks just days after the big reveal of their little secret at the Midwest Hair show where we learned all that's new and happening in hair this spring.

Judging by the chosen new styles of Hollywood's most forward-thinking celebs, think Rihanna and Michelle Williams, style this spring is all about short. The most current hair trends feature blunt fringe, complementary monochromatic colors and generously cropped cuts.

The experts at Sassoon say spring's hautest looks are inspired by the quintessential 80s style icons. But, before your mind drifts to Whitesnake videos and the Brat Pack, the look is more Linda Evangelista than Tawny Kitaen. Think of the curvy figures, bright fabrics and an individuality embodied by the supermodels of the 80s. After the Kate Moss modeling days, high fashion has dictated that thin is in, but this spring fashionistas are embracing the curves of the past and echoing a new motto. Waif is out, and healthy shape is back in, for both bodies and hair.

When it comes to a spring change, the most important part of a cut, color and style is how it suits the individual. Spring looks are not so much about creating a factory-standard cut on each style seeker entering the salon, but rather about creating a whole new cut to exude individuality while bearing in mind the season's most prevalent trends.

Expert Sassoon colorist Nicole Tabloff knows that the right color for the individual is the first step towards a great look. She says, "Some tones just don't work for some people," luckily it's the colorists job to make some realistic assessments for the client and come up with a look that suits all aspects of their style and even personality. She insists that color choices should be based on skin tone and personality. So, even though you might lust after Jessica Simpson's perfect honey blonde, or Dita von Teese's daring dark locks, allow your stylist to recommend a color that won't clash with your skin tone, maintenance routine or overall style.

Creative Director Marilyn Harmon and Art Director Lori Potochnik of Sassoon Chicago agree that the perfect cut isn't about mimicking the latest coif to grace the cover of Vogue; it's about creating a shape that works for you. As a quintessential aspect of this spring's look, blunt fringe can appear in many different lengths. Harmon notes, "Fringe is so great because it can be cut to different lengths to suit all face shapes and personal styles." From barely there to brazenly long, this is a key aspect of this season's hair trends.

We say spring hair is the best it's been. It isn't about cookie cutter looks or one-tone suits all color. Spring hair is all about you. Whether you keep your hair long and flowing, short and stylish or at a happy medium, embrace what works for you and let your individuality shine through.
