Tirra Salon and Spa

Aveda Body Polish & Hot Stone Massage

As I made my way down Erie Street to Tirra Salon and Spa just west of Orleans Street, I noticed how popular this section of River North had become since the first time I visited this Aveda concept salon several years ago. And Tirra is still standing strong.

Set within an impressive, brick walk-up building, the salon and spa take over the first-story loft. Light hardwood floors shine with the bright sunlight that peers through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Accented with exposed brick and brushed metal mirrors, the stylish hair and makeup salon and nail care areas all share an open exposure onto Erie, which makes for lively people watching. Past the front desk in the opposite direction, a private door takes spa visitors to an earthly escape. The spa's treatment rooms, changing room with a shower and bathroom, and relaxation area feature a luxurious yet earthy décor of sandstone countertops and tables, earth-toned furnishings and other subtle elements.

After checking in for an Aveda Body Polish and Hot Stone Massage treatment combo, I was given spa sandals in exchange for my shoes, and directed to the changing room where I stored my clothes and changed into the olive colored waffle robe in my locker. When I emerged, my gracious esthetician greeted me and showed me to a cozy leather recliner where I would sit and soak my feet in a footbath of warm sudsy water and Aveda's finest bath salts.

I soaked for about 15 minutes, and was then taken to a treatment room where my esthetician began the treatment by explaining all of the ingredients that make up the Body Polish. This soothing body scrub polishes the skin to perfection while exfoliating every cell that shouldn't be there. To create the mix, she blended Aveda's Soothing Aqua Therapy Salts with the line's Smoothing Body Polish - for what she called a purifying, skin-refining shine that replenishes lost moisture.

As I lied on top of the treatment table, which was covered with a thin coat of plastic to protect the leather from the sandy oily scrub, she used gentle friction to massage the scrub onto my skin. Working in circular motions along my back, neck and shoulders, she explained that her upward circles were directed toward the heart to stimulate circulation. Moving on to my arms, legs, feet and stomach, my skin had now become well saturated.

Now she instructed me how to rinse it all away in Tirra's luxurious spa shower. I put on my robe and went back to the changing room, where she had set a new robe and fresh towels aside. She suggested I start with the top of my arms and back and brush the polish off with a washcloth working my way down. Once my skin was wet, the scrub turned into little suds that rinsed easily away. In my fresh robe and sandals, I went back to my treatment room where the esthetician was waiting with a cleanly dressed table, ready to start my deep tissue massage with hot stones.

I lay down on the table face down with my head in the face cradle, and the intuitive esthetician touched my arm lightly and then looked at her selection of single note aromatherapy oils. On instinct, she selected Lavender Fleurs and Eucalyptus for me based on what she felt I needed. I was awestruck. I always gravitate toward both, and I happen to love lavender. She added three drops of each to her warmed massage oil and began the massage on my back. Working her way around my shoulders and arms to my lower back and then my legs and feet, she had a precise technique that was both soothing and stress relieving. She asked that I concentrate on my breathing as she placed more emphasis on tighter muscles and trigger points.

Next she used large heated basalt stones on my trouble spots, like around my shoulder blades and the base of my neck, in slow deep manipulations. While hot stones are traditionally placed atop certain areas of the body to target blockages and alleviate tension, the esthetician added that she also uses hot stones to help "iron out the stress" in the body, like a tool rather than an ointment.

At the end, the treatment delivered what it promised - soft glowing skin, relaxed muscles and an overall refreshed sense of health. The superior standard of service, expert professionals, and the serene environment of Tirra Salon and Spa continue to impress.
