TIRRA SALON & SPA

Caribbean Body Treatment

I walked into Tirra cold, wet and frazzled - mentally and physically thousands of miles away from the tropical islands that inspired my Caribbean body treatment. But, things started looking up almost immediately.

I was greeted warmly at the door by the welcoming desk staff and quickly shuttled into a cozy cotton robe and disposable slippers. Phyllis, my therapist, placed my feet in a bowl of warm water filled with bath milk while she readied the room.

First, I picked vanilla as my scent of choice for the treatment. Then Phyllis tucked me into the blankets covering the heated massage table and explained that she would rub me down for a dry exfoliation, apply a stimulating seaweed-based paste, wrap me in the blankets for about ten minutes and, finally, massage my skin with an Aveda Caribbean body lotion. At the end of our 75-minutes together my skin would be soft and stimulated. We got to work.

Phyllis put on loofah gloves and rubbed my arms, legs and torso to remove dead skin and stimulate my lymphatic system. Next, she mixed up a green paste containing seaweed extracts, a ginger and sugar combination, warm water and a generous helping of vanilla essence. The paste went on thick, tingling as it was spread over my arms, legs, chest and back. Something was definitely working.

Then Phyllis wrapped me up cocoon-style in the blankets, telling me to expect some perspiration. I managed to forget the fact that I was basically a sweating green butterfly because Phyllis launched into a soothing scalp and face massage with flower water. Soon, it was time to unwrap and wash off in Tirra's amazingly warm and pressurized shower. I came back to the room clean and ready for rubdown number two.

After discussing my pressure preference, Phyllis expertly began kneading lotion into my skin. She systematically worked my muscles, easing stress-induced knots while moisturizing with the lotion and flower water. It was definitely Caribbean heaven. Some additional pluses - Phyllis never left me alone and made sure I was always comfortable temperature-wise. Because the treatment uses body lotion rather than oil, I didn't feel greasy when I left. And the best part - the wrap left my skin smooth and soft for two days!

I walked out of Tirra relaxed, smoothed and smelling faintly of a tropical island. All I was missing was a tan. Next week: spa bronzing!
