Tirra Salon and Spa
Aveda Manicure and Pedicure
Stepping into the hip, River North salon Tirra, I was instantly greeted by a warm and welcoming, bright and lofty space. The ladies at the front desk greeted me and offered my choice of pastry, ice water, tea or coffee, I was shown the way to a pedicure nook, cordoned off by curtains for privacy (who wants their calluses revealed to the world?) On the way, I took note of the exposed brick, earth-toned furnishings, brushed metal mirrors, lush leather chairs and large bay windows. The space was stylishly adorned and upbeat, hip music lingered in the background, setting the tone for a lively experience.
On
tap for me today, an Aveda Spa Pedicure, just what the doctor ordered
for a pair of tired, dry, weather-beaten feet. We began by soaking in
a footbath of Active oil and Aqua Therapy Bath Salts to soften the water
and my skin. I reclined in the massage chair and let the mechanics in
the cushions do their thing. After several minutes, my pedicurist began
the cutting, filing, cuticle trimming, buffing and shaping of my toenails.
She exfoliated my feet with a special foot file, and then scrubbed all
the way up to my knees with the same bath salt and oil combination. She
explained that this mixture helps the salts exfoliate while the oil beads
remain to soften and dissolve into the skin. After she rinsed, patted
and dried my feet, she covered them in active oil mixed with Rosemary
Mint Body Lotion that helps ease tension. She then wrapped my feet in
plastic bags followed by hot towels. She explained that this procedure
allows the pores to open and really absorb and soften the skin. After
the wraps came off, she massaged my feet and lower legs with Foot Relief
Lotion, which includes natural fruit acids that actually break down calluses.
This relaxing, rejuvenating treatment concluded with the expert polishing
of my toenails. I chose OPI's "A Man in Every Portugal" for a rich, wintry
shade. My feet were placed into pedi flip-flops, and I was led to the
Manicure station for a similar procedure for my hands and fingernails.
The Aveda Spa Manicure was almost the same as the pedicure with the
exception of a few products. She started with a revitalizing lotion with
a unique vitamin formula for stressed skin. While she trimmed, filed and
buffed, I sipped on Aveda's Comforting tea composed of licorice root and
peppermint. In exchange for the Foot Relief Lotion, she used Hand Relief
Lotion that contains jojoba oil. My darling technician explained that
this elixir, derived from the jojoba bean, incorporates not only jojoba
oil but jojoba wax, a wax that is of the closest composition to skin's
natural make up, which is ideal for hydrating. She then mixed in a bit
of Soothing Body Polish with Active Oil to form an exfoliating scrub.
She wrapped my hands in similar fashion as my feet, with plastic bags
and hot towels, which allowed the body polish to break down and the oil
to dissolve into my skin. My hands were velvety soft. She finished off
with her meticulous polish application, a mixture of Essie's Mademoiselle
and Allure, for a natural, pinky sheer color.
I found the entire Spa Manicure and Pedicure treatment to be just wonderful,
with much attention to every detail, expert precision with each nail and
a friendly nature that made the experience that much more enjoyable. My
hands and feet were soft and glowing, and my nails looked brilliant.
