Elizabeth Adam Salon and Day Spa

2008 Review

For native Chicagoans who also happen to be shopaholics, Water Tower Place, on the Magnificent Mile, is a virtual shopping paradise. What some might not realize, though, is that those seven floors we all know and love aren't the only things that Water Tower Place has to offer. Tucked behind the Water Tower Place shops in suite 908E, to be exact, Elizabeth Adam Salon and Day Spa provides a comprehensive urban oasis for clients seeking enhanced wellness and beauty.

Owner Elizabeth has over three decades of industry experience as an esthetician and is also certified in Naprapathy (a specialty focused on the health of connective tissues). She opened her doors in 1987 in hopes of bringing some European flavor to the salon and spa aficionados of the Windy City. The result is a cavernous space decorated in muted earth tones that offers a little something for everyone.

The hair salon boasts 25 chairs and a slew of talented stylists. The spa is equipped with four pedicure stations and seven treatment rooms dedicated to massages, facials and waxing. Two of which adjoin for couple's or friend's massages and body treatments. Finally, a hydrotherapy room offers unique water services.

My visit started in the Hydrotherapy room. After taking a shower, I met my technician in the softly lit room where she instructed me to enter the Spa Oceana capsule. This sophisticated device looks somewhat like a tanning bed, closing down upon the spa-goer. But, instead of offering artificial rays, this capsule administers a water massage therapy experience. Since I hoped for an experience that was calming and soothing, the technician created a custom program that included a Vichy shower and foot massage, all administered while I rested on a soothing, vibrating platform. While enclosed in the capsule, which also featured a beautiful program of colored lights to assist in my relaxation, I enjoyed a unique massage totally tailored to my relaxation style.

I emerged from my Hydrotherapy session with soft skin, supple muscles and a profound sense of ease. And, while my Hydrotherapy Massage was as relaxing as I could have hoped, my day of relaxation was far from over. Next, I met with a massage therapist who treated me to a completely Customized Massage. Following a discussion of my objectives and concerns I forgot about the world outside as the massage therapists addressed my stress-stiffened muscles. Since the massage therapists at Elizabeth Adam Salon and Day Spa specialize in stretching and reeducating weak muscles to promote greater body balance, my massage therapist focused on the muscles in my back, gently kneading and healing them with perfect technique.

After an hour of total relaxation, I rose from the massage table and ended my day at Elizabeth Adam Salon and Day Spa relaxed, rejuvenated and ready to recommend the space to all my friends.

Elizabeth Adam Salon and Day Spa a broad spectrum of services that go far beyond standard spa fare. Since Elizabeth herself loves to travel, she has constructed her spa and salon menu to feature some of her favorite around-the-world treatments that are scarcely found in the U.S. Noteworthy offerings include Shirodara, a 6,000 year old Indian Ayurvedic treatment that consists of warming the large intestine to promote relaxation, a scalp massage, foot reflexology to enervate the colon and hand reflexology tailored to suit the client's needs. Another treatment inspired by Elizabeth's travels is The Orient Essence Ceremony. This treatment involves a massage with custom-blended herb-filled pouches and a special Balinese stone.

And apart from just relaxation, Elizabeth Adam's offerings promote full-body wellness, too. Using natural materials helps spa treatments double as effective treatment aids for a bevy of medical concerns including arthritis, candida and fibromyalgia.

Once bodies are treated to some relaxation and wellness, Elizabeth Adam Salon and Day Spa can also treat them to a serving of style in the salon. Playing host to some of the city's top stylists; the hair salon boasts color services as a specialty alongside expert cuts and texture services. From head to toe, Elizabeth Adam Salon and Day Spa can transform any Chicago Shopaholic into a Chicago Beauty in a single visit.
