The city of Lake Geneva is a storied destination for many Midwesterners, thanks to hundreds of acres of picturesque water front property on the shores of Lake Geneva as well as stunning, historical architecture, season-less activities, and a colorful past. And while this Wisconsin destination is indisputably ideal for families, there's also a rock and roll edge here that appeals to the less settled as well. (No wonder, given that both Hugh Hefner's Playboy Club and Axl Rose have called "The Hamptons of the Midwest" home.) Grand Geneva Resort, formerly the Playboy compound, overflows with amenities from outdoor activities including golf, skiing and snow sports within the resort's 1300 acre parcel, to an indoor, 50,000 square foot water park in the adjacent lodge. Guests enjoy gourmand restaurants such as Geneva ChopHouse and Brissago, as well as the new Embers Terrace, where guests sip cocktails and nibble desserts in front of a crackling fire pit. One of Lake Geneva's most luxurious destinations, Grand Geneva Resort is among just a handful of AAA Four- Diamond resorts in Wisconsin. And while I appreciated the Egyptian cotton sheets, flat screen TVs and stunning views from the balcony of my suite, being somewhat of a spa expert, I intended to spend some serious time investigating the resort's Well Spa + Salon. The Well Spa + Salon is complete with a full gym, indoor pool and tennis courts, as well as every detail that a discerning spa goer could possibly demand, from the warm environs, reminiscent of a rustic Aspen lodge, to the deep chocolate and warm cocoa colors that drench the walls and plush couches. In the lounge, I found beverages, magazines, plasma TVs and a cozy sanctuary where I, in my plush spa robe, could do nothing less than relax completely. My esthetician greeted me and ushered me back to the facial rooms down a long stretch of hallway for my first service, the Sea Stone Facial. The treatment began with a hot stone massage and back exfoliation followed by a calming ritual of treatments on my face ranging from enzyme masks to cleansing to pore extractions. Throughout the process, my arms and legs were massaged into bliss with warm stones as my soon-to-be-glowing complexion was treated with Biotherm products, mineral-rich seawater and relaxing botanical extracts. Post-facial, I was greeted by my nail technician who whisked me away to the salon wing for my Grand Pedicure and Hand Treatment. As I perched on my pedicure throne, happy with a diverse selection of magazines, I chatted with fellow spa goers who casually sipped on white wine or peppermint tea. After a thorough soak and clean up, I dipped my feet in paraffin for the softest of skin. How did my esthetician know I was a runner and wore heels? Divine as it was, after 10 minutes the paraffin was removed and my piggys were painted an impeccable shade of Bordeaux. Next, my hands were treated to a mini-manicure with cuticle care and polish of my choice. I opted for a pretty polish called Ballet Pink as my mani-neighbor informed me that I must dine at the ChopHouse for dinner that night. Nothing like a spa day to build a healthy appetite, I always say. With a couple of quick dry drops for my toenails and fingernails, I was on my way back to the room to enjoy a glass of wine and a balcony view of golfers finishing up their game. Grand Geneva Resort & Well Spa + Salon is a divine destination sure to satisfy the cravings of avid golfers, sport skiers, energetic children, famished foodies and the most cultivated spa connoisseurs. My summer sojourn was amazing but I'm told that October is fantastic at Grand Geneva Resort, with pumpkin carving and haunted hay rides. I also have it on good advice that Christmas is decadent here as well, with millions of twinkling lights and a delicious professional gingerbread house contest. It seems that no matter the season, Grand Geneva Resort & Well Spa + Salon has all the ingredients needed for a vacation filled with excitement and adventure, as well as relaxation and renewal.
