In our youth, amidst all the slumber parties, ballet recitals and hours of playing dress up, we undoubtedly learned just one thing: Girls really do just wanna have fun. And though the days of dress up and sleepovers may be long gone, Chicago Beauties can escape to the trendy West Loop's Flirty Girl Fitness for a light-hearted, fun workout that offers incredible results. Aside from being a great place to gather the girls for parties and get- togethers, Flirty Girl Fitness is the perfect grown-up playground for women who want to get in shape. This ladies-only fitness center offers nontraditional fitness classes that often encourage Chicagoland women to step off the treadmill and start shakin' it all the way to smaller pants sizes and more positive body images. After parking in the private parking lot, I entered through Flirty Girl's sliding glass doors and knew this was no standard gym. Devoid of the traditional treadmill, step climber and weights (which will make any fun-loving girl cringe), I couldn't imagine breaking a sweat in such a luxe space. As I walked up to the chocolate brown reception desk (which happens to double as the locale for the fitness center's Coyote Ugly dance class), I noticed accenting touches of bright pink and the signature Flirty Girl script adorning the walls. And, as if the décor couldn't be any more desirable for this girl's girl, I noticed the divine full bar in the reception area, which serves smoothies by day and Flirty Girl's signature "Flirtinis" by night. And that's not all Flirty Girl has to offer. Flirty Girl Fitness is made up of three workout studios, a fully stocked locker room and the Flirty Girl Nail Bar, where I would spend the first portion of my visit for the Flirty Manicure. After I chose a bright pink, OPI polish that seemed to match the Flirty Girl spirit perfectly, I sat down at one of the two manicure stations, Pink Flirtini in hand. It wasn't hard to relax as my nail technician buffed, filed and painted my nails to perfection. A couple coats of pink later, my nail technician finished off the manicure in just enough time for them to dry completely before I attended the popular Pole Dancing class. The largest of the three studios, equipped with silver poles and a surprising amount of energetic women, greeted me. And while taking a pole dancing class might otherwise be a truly intimidating experience, my nerves floated away at the encouragement of the friendly instructor and whole room full of women. We began the class with a sexy warm up that had hips swaying and hair tossing as we learned how to let loose with some basic techniques. Beyond moving on the floor, we next tackled spinning around the pole. It is certainly not as easy as it looks, but is a fun challenge. And, once I got the hang of it, I found it beat the pants off of any other sort of exercise I'd ever experienced (no pun intended). The instructor made sure every member of the class had a firm grasp on the pole spin before lunging us into an entire dance routine. With energy high and enthusiasm even a little higher, we mastered a tastefully sexy routine that had each lady smiling. By the end of the hour- long class, I was moving in ways I didn't even know I could and definitively decided that this was the workout for me. Leaving class with a bit more confidence than before, and a few new gal pals, I made my way to the nail bar for a Flirty Pedicure. Here, I was joined by Flirty Girl founder, Kerry Knee. As we both soaked our feet in warm water filled with hot stones, Knee explained that her vision for Flirty Girl Fitness all began when she saw a TV special on pole dancing as a workout. After watching the special, Knee ordered her own pole and taught herself how to do it at home, formulating a great workout. From there, Knee, along with her sister Krista, opened the first Flirty Girl Fitness in Canada and in 2007 expanded to their first US location in Chicago. And, the rest is history. As I continued to have my feet soaked, scrubbed, massaged and painted, I learned what a perfect place Flirty Girl Fitness is to host an array of events from bachelorettes to birthdays and get-togethers to girl's nights out. Polished, pampered and even a little exhausted, I left Flirty Girl Fitness with a new favorite spot in the city. Flirty Girl Fitness offers the most fun you'll ever have working out and will make you kiss the everyday gym good-bye. It's the perfect place for any woman to let it all hang out and tap into her flirty, sexy self without feeling even a hint of self-consciousness.
