You might think a med spa located in Evergreen Park would specifically cater to the residents of the southwest suburbs. And, while this state-of-the-art facility has definitely won over the faces, legs and tummies, of locals in this growing town, it is well worth the short drive from the Kennedy for any city dweller. Previously a Cupids Candies, Evergreen Laser and Medical Spa turned a piece of Chicago history into an innovative facility of the future offering procedures and equipment that can't easily be found in the city. Upon entering, it was clear that this med spa focused more on the "med" rather than the "spa," in that the surroundings were streamlined, clean and very office-like, while educational brochures providing an overview of their various services adorned the countertops. Just by the look of it, I knew Evergreen was serious about skin and that I was in good hands. Warmer and more inviting than the streamlined look of the spa, was the demeanor of the staff, including the managing physician Dr. Razzaque. A certified cosmetic dermatologist, Dr. Razzaque performs or supervises all procedures in his spa including: permanent hair removal, vein-care, wrinkle reduction, non-surgical facelift, cellulite, acne and body contour services. I was escorted to a small room where I met Dr. Razzaque for a consultation in order to determine which services were appropriate for me. While all services carry equal weight as far as popularity, the Dr. explained that the Accent Thermotherapy and HydraFacial were not only popular, but practically exclusive to Evergreen, as they are one of the very few medical spas in Chicago housing the necessary equipment to execute the services. He explained that he seeks out cutting edge equipment and services, in an effort to keep up with the continuous growth of the industry. Before getting started, the doctor thoroughly explained both services and allowed me to peruse books demonstrating the before and after effects of each treatment. After making sure that I was completely comfortable with receiving both services, he introduced me to my trained therapist who preformed both treatments. In short, Accent Volumetric Thermotherapy is a skin tightener. Whether you are trying to diminish a sagging jowl line, or firm your backside, Accent does both. Deep thermal heating promotes collagen synthesis and increases blood circulation, which also helps to drain fluids and toxins. Lastly, the thermal activity shrinks connective tissue, thus improving the skin's texture, contour and integrity. While not at the age yet where this service is recommended for my face, my therapist said that one of the best places to see an instantaneous result is the tummy, keeping in mind that it takes anywhere between six to 12 treatments to achieve a final result. Truly a lunchtime treatment, I simply pulled up my shirt to expose my stomach while resting on the treatment table. My technician applied baby oil to provide lubrication for the Accent wand and glided the heated wand across one portion of my stomach at a time. If I felt the temperature was getting too warm, I merely alerted my technician, who would back off the foot pedal controlling the temperature and cool down the wand. Overall, the procedure was relaxing and the combination of the heat and the wand felt more like a massage than a serious skin care service. The Accent system heats the skin's inner layer, causing immediate results that work in a progressive nature, as the heating action stimulates collagen production that requires three to five treatments at two week intervals to receive optimum results. Depending on the size of the area, treatments may take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes. My technician stressed that the doctor will not perform the Accent system on anyone who is overweight, as it is meant as a toning procedure, not a quick fix for weight loss. When all was said and done, I slipped my pants on with a bit more ease, making my lunch a distant memory. As predicted, Evergreen means business when it comes to treating the skin, so it was no surprise when my technician instructed me to remove my makeup in the small sink inside the treatment room prior to the service. While traditional hydrating facials may involve basic exfoliation, multi-layered masks and applicable moisturizers to correct the skin, the results are minimal, if not extremely temporary. In fact, the wand used during this 15-minute service has the ability to do a lot more than add moisture to thirsty skin. HydraFacial has been known to correct severe cases of hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, specialty skin cases (acne, oily, sensitive and ethnic), and even puffy eyes. Utilizing a wand that replicates one used during a microdermabrasion treatment (which Evergreen also offers), the wand - which is often described as feeling "like a cool paintbrush moving slowly over the face," removes dead skin cells and impurities while simultaneously saturating the new skin with hydrating and nourishing treatment serums. Many people report seeing a more radiant skin tone after just one treatment, but a series of six treatments (one per week), is recommended for optimal results. I was treated with SPF before walking out the door and told that I could hang out for a few moments before applying makeup if desired. The following day my skin was much smoother and radiant. Impressed with results, I could only imagine how phenomenal my skin would appear after receiving six treatments. My experience taught me that med spas have something for everyone, and that services need not be invasive to produce amazing results. If you are looking for Enya and aromatherapy, Evergreen is not your spa. If you are looking for serious cutting-edge skin care services administered by a professional, knowledgeable and friendly staff, then the trip the western suburbs is worth the short trek for services that produce long term results.
