Urban Spa Chic delivers beauty to a thriving stretch of River West, just east of Ashland and south of Grand. Bringing a decade of experience as an esthetician to the business, spa owner Dayna DeLaurentis has taken a hands-on approach to creating a dreamy, cheerful oasis in the light- filled second story space. Tiffany blue walls, chocolate accents and white orchids set the stage for quiet relaxation and luxurious treatments. The design is bright, hip and cool, just like the staff that greeted me upon entry with herbal tea and a snack. I happily accepted but declined a seat in the comfortable waiting area because the spa's Beauty Boutique was far too enticing. Instead of carrying complete product lines from a handful of brands, DeLaurentis has compiled a carefully edited selection of the top goods from her favorites. Everything is organized by application, with areas devoted to lips, eyes, masks, exfoliants, cleansers, toners, moisturizers, correction and protection. Cliché though it may be, I felt like a kid in a candy shop. When the time came for my first treatment I knew I would return later to investigate more thoroughly. Urban Spa Chic has four private treatment rooms, each beautifully decorated in subdued earth tones and illuminated by votives. My first treatment was an Aroma Wrap with Facial. Once I changed into a pair of disposable panties I positioned myself on the table with a strategically placed towel and my esthetician entered the room and explained the different phases of the body wrap, which involves the use of Decleor products and clocks in at a delightfully epic 90 minutes. I was exfoliated from the neck down with a fragrant, fresh scrub then slathered in body butter prior to the application of a body mask consisting of plant and clay extracts. Finally, the esthetician wrapped me in the mylar blanket, using my own body heat to maximize the effectiveness of the mask. After massaging my neck and face, the esthetician examined my complexion and began designing a custom facial using products by Eminence and SkinCeuticals. Complete with exfoliation, steam, extractions and another heavenly shoulder massage, my facial was 30 minutes of pure bliss. Following my facial, I was given some time to relax on my own as well as a comfortable robe. Though it was hard to motivate myself to move from the comfortable position I had become accustomed to, I crossed the hall to a spacious shower to rinse off the products used during my body wrap. My skin was remarkably soft and supple and I felt blissfully relaxed when I returned to the room for the final touch, an application of moisture-rich aroma essence oil. Next, I moved on to my 30-minute Aroma Body Butter Massage. Ready to begin in the neighboring room, the licensed massage therapist first asked me a series of questions regarding my body and goals for the massage. Using generous amounts of aromatherapy body butter, the LMT used a combination of deep tissue and Swedish techniques, applying firm, measure pressure to the tensest areas with an expert touch. Following the massage I arrived in the charming nail care space for a Spa Manicure and Pedicure. The pristine pedicure stations and the staff member's attention to maintaining a sterile environment impressed me. Even using disposable items to maximize sanitation and sterilization, these technicians are serious about health and sanitation and, I learned, just as serious about total relaxation. The components and ingredients that make up the Spa Pedicure change seasonally and, this being fall, I was treated to the Pumpkin Pie with Fresh Whipped Cream treatment. Using an active-enzyme pumpkin scrub, my nail technician exfoliated my feet and lower legs. Next, she applied a warm vanilla mask. Lost in relaxation and the tantalizing smell of fall, I savored every minute! Once my feet were at their finest, the technician worked nimbly to apply flawless color, and then worked the same magic on my hands. Before making my exit, I went back to revisit the dizzying selection of products in the spa's boutique. A second look revealed offerings from Decleor, SkinCeuticals, Eminence, Tassi, Bath Bombs, Bare Escentuals, Simple Solutions, Sweet Spot, Pure Inventions tea extracts and candles from Skeem.
