Nailing New Looks

There’s no need to retire the classics, ladies. Traditional polish picks, from red to French, are still in style. But who doesn’t get tired of the same old talons?  Changing your manicure is a quick and easy way to update your look. Plus, once you’ve strayed, going back to your standby mani colors is even more satisfying.

Ombre

Put the cocktail shaker down, Ms. Mixologist, you’ll need all of your powers of concentration to concoct this haute look. We checked in with the Nail Stylists at NYC’s Dashing Diva to get the lowdown on high style for nails.

Ombre is segueing from its comeback on clothing to its new destination on hands (and feet) and Dashing Diva’s Head Nail Tech, Pattie Yankee, told us how to achieve subtle shading on our nails.

Begin with Dashing Diva's The City That Never Sleeps polish, a dark eggplant shade, and  NYC Fleet Week, a matte white shade.  Yankee recommends pouring out four dime-size blobs of The City That Never Sleeps, and adding small increments of white to each one to create a gradation of hues. Now it’s time to paint; start by applying The City That Never Sleeps on your pinkie and then paint each nail a different color graduating the hues across your nails.

Hue Moon

Also known as the reverse French Manicure, the Half Moon manicure is best for those with style chutzpah. It’s an attention getting look sure to draw stares (and envy).

Apply one coat of your polish color of choice over the entire nail and allow polish to dry completely; Yankee’s pick is NYC Fleet Week, a solid white shade.

Next, use a semicircular French-manicure stencil sticker or a circular sticker, to block off the bottom third of the nail.  Paint two coats of a dark polish, such as NYPD Blue, adark blue shade,or Limo Service, jet black, from the stencil to the tip of the nail.

Once polish dries, peel off the sticker and finish with a quick dry topcoat painted over the entire nail.

We also like Creative Nails Design’s chic take on the Half Moon manicure (pictured). And while the color shown was custom blended by CND for Ruffian's fall 2009 runway show, we’re told that Bloodline, from CND’s newest Colour & Effects line, is a close match.

White on

Dashing Diva “styled” the nails of Gwen Stefani and models at Stefani’s L.A.M.B. Fashion Show at Milk Studios (pictured).   NYC Fleet Week shade from Dashing Diva, a solid white color that matches Gwen’s favorite look, was used to give models runway ready manicures.
