Spring's Glistening Metallic Makeup TrendFrom gilded
gold to brilliant bronze, spring shimmers with a sparkling array of surprisingly
wearable metallics. Toss those jewels dolls, this season you’re lips, eyes,
nails and locks are the accessories du jour. Golden
Girl To look gorgeous in gold, apply this sparkling hue with
a light hand and blend expertly. Gold complements most skin tones so this hue
is ultra-wearable. Looking gilded rather than gaudy means playing up no more than
one feature with gold.
Spotlight the center of your lips with gold to garner
a plumper-looking pout, but don’t cover lips in shine. Haute Face’s
Cream Lipstick in Iced Out serves up sheer and sexy sparkle that won’t
look sleazy ($21 at www.hauteface.com).
Eyes really pop with a touch of the gold stuff but don’t sport this shimmering
shade from lash line to upper lid. Remember to pair gilded peepers with neutral
lips. Two products we love are Julie Hewitt’s Palette Boudoir
in Cleo, a sultry collection for eyes, cheeks and lips, as well as Sephora’s
Luminous Trio in “Bronze” ($15), shimmering powders for cheeks,
eyes, shoulders, and décolletage. Girls who wanna have fun will relish
Frédéric Fekkai’s irreverent Hi-Lights Hair Mascara
in Gold ($20 at www.beautysak.com). The
brush-on hi-lights serve up luminous temporary color crafted of diamond powder
and crushed pearl. Copper Chic Copper’s
rich, deep hue is ideal for women with more color in their skin, from those with
olive skin tones to deep mahogany. In fact, Beyoncé is often pictured sporting
this shade of shimmering bronze. Those looking to make a statement from
head to toe will adore Julie Hewitt’s Shimmy, an
all-over face and body shimmer ($22 at www.juliehewett.net).
Ideal for face, eyes, lips and body, Shimmy is super easy to apply, just
swipe on the richly pigmented hues like fingerpaint. For spring try Cleo or Goldy.
On eyes, opt for Victoria Secret’s Beauty Rush Liquid Glitter
Liner in Copperhot ($7 at Victoria Secret) paired with Tarte’s
Lock & Roll creaseless eye shadow duo in Bronze ($17 at www.tartecosmetics.com).
Tarte’s two-step waterproof eye shadow starts with a sheer wash of cream
shadow followed by a coordinating roll-on loose mineral-based shadow that won’t
crease. Complement copper lids with a molten metal manicure. We like Dashing
Diva’s nail polish in Cinnamon Shimmer ($7.99 at www.dashingdiva.com).
Silver
Screen Goddess
You too can smolder in silver a la Jennifer Lopez
with Lorac’s On Screen Duo in Champagne & Caviar, a dark gray
and champagne shimmer powder highlighter and cream eye shadow and liner duo ($24
at Sephora). Next, line eyes with your pick of Color Theory by Cynde
Watson’s Precious Eyes Eye Color Pencils, sold in a set that includes
three double ended pencils overflowing with the season’s hippest metallics
including Pearl/Pewter, Amethyst/Platinum and Onyx/Bronze ($29.95 at hsn.com).
Since
silver is inherently more subtle, feel free to play up that pout by applying your
favorite shade of lip color and liner followed by Napoleon Perdis’ DéVine
Goddess Lipgloss in Marilyn, an iridescent pearl that Napoleon himself calls
“Girl Power in a Gloss.” Metal Rules
- If opting to wear metallics by day, apply sheer
shades. By night, layer on the shine and enjoy!
- Fair complexions glisten
in icy shades including silver, while warmer tones are complemented by bronze
and copper.
- Metallic eye shadows can settle into creases around the eyes.
If emphasizing under eye wrinkles is a concern, avoid this by applying a dot of
shadow to just the center of lids and blending outward.
