The Lipstick
Revival Aside
from those brand new patent leather pumps you just bought, come fall and winter,
shine is out. We know you’re loyal to your favorite gloss—and why
wouldn’t you be? It’s always served you well. Those never-fail Juicy
Tubes are sweet, moisturizing, low maintenance and have sealed more than a few
kisses for you. But if fashion insiders, beauty’s most respected brands,
and even celebrities are to be believed—and we’re pretty sure they
are—lipstick is back in a big way for fall. Of course, those glamour goddesses
who have been wearing it for years will insist lipstick was never “out.”
But for many of us, wearing lipstick is a whole new ball game. We’ve been
using just balm or gloss for most of our adult lives, but if you’re ready
to try something new, here are a few hints to help you hit it out of the park.
Many of this year’s hottest designers like Proenza Schouler,
Peter Som and Gucci sent models strutting down the catwalk with bold lips stealing
the show. Juicy plums, vibrant reds and deep bricks dominated New York’s
Fall Fashion Week, and beauty companies are playing too. This season, industry
leaders like Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel and Lancôme have stepped up the
luxe factor by creating mouth-watering hues in fashionable, accessory-worthy tubes.
Spend some quality time at your favorite makeup counter to find the perfect color
for your skin tone. The shade you choose is definitely important in getting the
look right, so feel free to enlist the help of the pro behind the counter or your
always honest gal pal. Okay, we know what you’re thinking:
Anything and everything looks good on models and celebrities, right? But you don’t
need to be flawless to make red lips look good. Sporting this look well doesn’t
require having lips like Scarlett Johansson, skin like Jessica Alba or a smile
like Cameron Diaz; the key to looking great in lipstick is having the confidence
to pull it off. Let’s be honest, there’s nothing more intriguing than
a woman who knows she looks amazing. Don’t be shy. Give your mouth the attention
it deserves.
If you’re headed to work, make bold lips day appropriate
by doing two things. First, keep them predominately matte. Makeup artists suggest
exfoliating and conditioning your lips before applying color to help it hold and
to prevent those unsightly lip-flake fiascos. Then, paint on your desired hue
and line lips with a matching color to keep lipstick from bleeding out. Dust with
a light coat of translucent powder for a perfectly pretty pout, or if you must
add balm, use a low-sheen version. Secondly, keep all other aspects of your look
subtle. Keep makeup light and simple so as not to overdose on color, and avoid
loud prints on clothing that will compete for attention. In contrast with bold
lips, the more pared-down your look the better.
If you’re going for
a more dramatic nighttime look, pair a deeper plum lip with a few coats of black
mascara and your favorite heels. Grab a sexy clutch and head out on the town.
One last tip: remember to enjoy turning those heads. Looking gorgeous really is
all it’s cracked up to be!
