Burlesque shapes beauty and style
From
The Pussycat Dolls to Dita Von Teese, burlesque
has gone main stream. Along the way, this kitschy yet sexy style of entertainment
has influenced fashion, beauty and beyond. Burlesque began as a nineteenth
century comedic entertainment that called upon rich, colorful sets, dramatic lighting
and musical performances. Today’s burlesque, often called neo- burlesque,
has emerged as upscale adult entertainment that features strip tease, cabaret
and dance. In 1995 when Robin Antin founded The Pussycat
Dolls, modern day burlesque began its rise to main stream popularity.
But classic Hollywood bombshells, such as Mae West, have long-used burlesque’s
cheeky double entendres and overt sexuality to launch their careers.
Beauty that aims to Tease Dita Von Teese,
often called the “International Queen of Burlesque,” emulates the
look of a classic pin up girl, think red lips and nails, ultra-dark locks, bold
brows, and fair skin. And in 2006, this neo-burlesque star scored the ultimate
nod to modern fame, a cosmetic contract as the spokesperson for M.A.C.
Cosmetics’ Viva Glam collection.
To replicate Von Teese’s Viva Glam look, start with warm, rosy cheeks,
using M.A.C.’s Powder Blush in Mocha ($17.50) applied only to the apples
of the cheeks. Next, create a classic smoky eye with Viva GlamEye Shadow in Malt,
Shroom and Brun ($14). Going heavy on the mascara is a must, as is the careful
application of liquid eye liner.-- the darker the better. Finally, complete
the retro-inspired look for lips with Cremestick Liner in Red ($14), Viva Glam
Lipstick in Viva Glam VI ($14) and coordinating Tinted Lipglass ($14). Log

Style comes out of the closet Fredrick’s
of Hollywood, once the trashy step-sister of Victoria’s Secret,
has come a long way, baby. And Fredrick’s recent addition of Dita Von Teese
as the face of their holiday pin up collection confirms burlesque’s current
popularity. Images on the Fredrick’s of Hollywood site, catalogs and collectible
calendars, showcase the burlesque beauty in classic lingerie, inspired by Fredrick’s
of Hollywood collections from the 1940s. While Madonna outed underwear
back in the 1980s, there’s no doubt that the popularity of neo-burlesque
has cemented a spot for lingerie and lingerie inspired clothing on the must-have
lists of fashionistas everywhere. In fact, the lingerie-inspired trend continues
in Spring 2008, as seen in couture collections shown at Mercedes Benz Spring Fashion
Week in Los Angeles. Completing lingerie’s transition from underwear
only to out-on-the-town wear, Von Teese insists that women who love lingerie are
not bad girls, encouraging women everywhere to, “just live dangerously!”
And for the time being, that sizzling sentiment is right on trend.
